What is this?

A red fruit, grows on a deciduous shrub or tree, with red jewels inside called arils? It is a pomegranate. Looking to Capture Autumn in Southern Nevada?

As a mother of two, I stay active looking for ways to capture each amazing moment. Two ways I celebrate my children's lives are to find engaging events and to record their experiences with photography. Fall Fun: Foliage Southern Nevada Neighborhoods was inspired by posts I read in one of my Facebook groups where mothers asked, "Where are the best places to take photos this fall?" Over the past few years, I have scoured websites, searched maps, and driven throughout the Las Vegas Valley seeking out locations and events. Las Vegas and its neighboring cities and towns have plenty of places to celebrate autumn.

Here eight neighborhoods in Las Vegas, Nevada to find fall foliage:

1. Canyon Gate, 89117: Rainbow Family Park at West Oakey Boulevard and Belcastro Street (one block east of South Tenaya Way).
2. Paradise, 89121: Paradise Park at East Tropicana Avenue and Harrison Drive (next to McCleod Drive).
3. Rancho Charleston, Spanish Oaks, and Scotch 80's, 89102: Bob Baskin Park at West Oakey Boulevard and South Rancho Drive (east of South Valley View Boulevard).
4. The Willows at Summerlin, 89135: Willows Park at 2775 Desert Marigold Lane (South Hualapai Way and Count Deiro Drive). Trails intertwine and connect Desert Marigold Lane to South Town Center Drive).

2. HalloVeen at the Magical Forest presented by the charity Opportunity Village, includes rides and attractions. October 4-6, 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27 at 5:00 pm. Purchase tickets online as an option. Call (702) 259-3741.
3. Gilcrease Orchard   at 7800 N Tenaya Way, Las Vegas, NV  FREE (fee for to drive vehicle to pumpkin patch or rent a wagon). Open Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:00 am - Noon, Saturdays 7:00 am - 2:00 pm and Sundays 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. Come select and pick your own pumpkin to purchase right from the vine! Fresh produce and apple and pear cider are also available.

Southern Highlands Fall Festival at 10950 Southern Highlands Pkwy., Las Vegas, NV           FREE festival on Saturday, October 19 11:00 am - 3:00 pm Games, raffle prizes, costume contest, vendors, food, drinks and fun for the whole family! The Days on Market (DOM) for single family homes in Las Vegas, NV 89131 has decreased.  The  DOM depends on the property median price. Driggs Title Inc. reported the average DOM was 98 days as of September 9, 2013. The table "Market Update: Characteristics per Quartile - 89131 Zip Code" shows a home with a median price of $525,000 has been on the market for an average 131 days, whereas a home median price of $270,000 has been on the market for an average 85 days. The real estate market continues to be "hot", meaning there is a greater demand for homes to sell with fewer homes available. With only 4148 properties listed (9/9/13), the inventory decreased this week which influenced the median list price to increase to $225,000. The market in 89131 continues to show bullish, investment prices rise faster compared to the historical average of the past few years.

July is National Ice Cream Month

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan of the United States of America signed a proclamation naming July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas, Nevada have a variety of places to create your festivity for celebrating with ice cream. Vegas Magazine recommends Cocolini at the Grand Canal Shops, Luv-It Frozen Custard on E. Oakey Blvd., Max Brenner at the Forum Shops, Serendipity 3 in front of Caesar's Palace on The Strip, Sugar Factory American Brasserie at the Paris Hotel & Casino, Sweet Chili at the Aria Resort & Casino, and Tutti Gelati at the Lake Las Vegas marina.

. Sasapops are "artisinal frozen pops".  Owners and sister and brother team, Liza Vergara-Gross and Joe Vergara explain, "When we landed in Las Vegas in 2008, frozen pops were no where in mind. We actually got our start at the local farmers markets selling handmade pastries, desserts and Hawaiian style snow cones called Shave Ice." I first learned about Sasapops at a local Las Vegas event and then found them in the frozen section at Whole Foods Market.  Sasapops may not be officially ice cream, but they state, "No added flavors or colors. No funky gums or stabilizers. Just pure goodness frozen on a stick." There are Salted Peanut Caramel, Carrot Cake, Apple Pie al la Mode Pumpkin Pie and there are more! If you are looking for a shopping treat for to celebrate National Ice Cream Day and Month, visit one of the Whole Foods Market locations. Whole Foods Market can be found in Henderson at Green Valley Parkway, Summerlin at West Charleston Blvd., Northwest Las Vegas at Tenaya, and along the south side of The Strip on Las Vegas Boulevard. Whole Foods Market offers a pleathora of options for ice cream.  Cashewtopia crafted from raw, organic cashew nut milk, is a vegan frozen dessert is dairy-free, gluten-free, low-glycemic and incredible!  Three Twins Ice Cream is organic and creamy. Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream pints fill a freezer section with flavors (Don't forget there are 7 Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream locations in the Las Vegas Valley!). Get Golfing with Kids

Look to golf as a way to develop family time and fun time for your children this summer. The National Golf Foundation reports that 10 million children and teens (ages 5-17) are either interested in learning how to play golf or are already playing the game at some. Get Golfing with Kids at the Driving Range

Begin with rules and practice swings at a driving range. Desert Pines Golf Club (3415 E Bonanza Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89101 at N. Pecos Road (702) 450-8170) offers a two-tiered climate controlled facility. The Practice Center is a place to keep cool and teach the basic skills about golf. 

1.      Set safety rules: No one can be behind you or close to you when you swing!

2.      Start swinging: The Practice Center will provide balls. Show children a simple baseball grip, how to place the ball on the tee, and then swing away.

3.      Smile and enjoy: Whiffs should not bother children or you. It is an exciting feeling when children connect with the ball. Keep the experience a short one and leave as soon as your young players lose interest.
